This issue brief and its video clips explore trauma-informed practices implemented in a Nashville, TN school. While the strategies are implemented in a school, the information and the videos on a whole-school approach, peace corners, mentor relationships, and teacher supports are relevant for out-of-school programs. This resource supports the COVID-19 response.
The Afterschool Alliance conducted a survey from May 28-June 30, 2020 to explore what afterschool programs are experiencing during the pandemic. The results show that 84 percent of programs are concerned that they will not be able to provide services in the fall due to increased requirements and 61 percent are concerned they may close permanently.
Rosemarie Allen, Institute for Racial Equity and Excellence, proposes that we reduce school and child care suspensions and expulsions by shifting the behaviors of adults. She recommends that we increase adult efforts to teach pro-social skills, and look for what is good, right, and best about each child.
