This self-paced module by You for Youth provides steps and strategies for program leaders to recruit, train, and retain program staff. It includes many resources such as sample job descriptions, human resource policies and staff manuals, and ideas for interview questions and reference checks. It can assist a program leader in creating a plan for improving staff recruitment and retention. This webinar explores what intermediaries are learning about what it takes to recruit and retain OST staff. The panel is facilitated by Angelica Portillo from NAA with panelists from Utah Afterschool Network, California Afterschool Network, Dallas Afterschool Network, and San Francisco Beacon Initiative. Strategies include hiring bonuses, compensation, flexibility, being involved in decision making, pre-service training and career pathways, and staff nurturing.
This course from Better Kid Care focuses on three tiers of strategies educators and programs can use to create a culture of caring that prioritizes relationships and supports for mental health and well-being. These are important strategies, given that research has found that educators' emotional availability and sensitivity to children's needs decrease in times of stress. To promote well-being, the module suggests developing a culture of caring, deepening relationships, and promoting work-life balance and self-care. To prevent burnout, suggestions include offering job accommodations, reflective supervision, and referrals to community resources. There are helpful worksheets such as burnout assessment and team-building activities. Available in Spanish. This resource supports resiliency. This resource supports equity.
This report from the Afterschool Alliance summarizes the results of a survey from Fall 2022 of 1,016 providers representing 7,400 centers. The survey found that 1 in 4 providers have not been able to return to pre-pandemic program capacity due to difficulties recruiting and retaining staff; increased costs of running programs; and some issues with demand since many parents are working from home. When asked about supports that would be helpful, the priority was advice about preventing staff burnout and keeping teams engaged.
Out-of-School Time (OST) plays a critical role in supporting working families and in providing children and youth with meaningful relationships, enrichment activities, and social and emotional learning (SEL), which lead to positive developmental outcomes. Additionally, there is a greater-than-ever focus on the potential for OST to support pandemic recovery efforts. To achieve that potential, there needs to be a new investment in the OST workforce.

This issue brief from the Sperling Center for Research and Innovation (SCRI) explores qualitative findings from surveys with summer 2021 staff to identify strategies to help in recruiting and retaining staff. Strategies include a focus on relationships and collaboration, supportive leadership, ensuring flexibility and autonomy, opportunities for personal and professional growth, and additional support staff. On December 15, 2022, the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment hosted the “Equitable Strategies to Support the Out-of-School Time Workforce” webinar to share strategies and resources that can support a strong and diverse afterschool, home-based child care, and summer workforce. Examples shared were from both a national and local perspective and explored funding and policies that are designed to respond to workforce challenges.
This journal article explores a large national childcare provider serving PreK-8th graders in hundreds of school-based programs and its efforts to reduce staff turnover among program managers and educators. Although the article is somewhat dense and long, the concept shared about how to increase retention by increasing managers' knowledge, skills, motivation, and organizational influences is worth it.
On May 19, 2022, the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment hosted “Strengthening the Out-of-School Time Workforce: A Guide to Developing Apprenticeships” webinar to share strategies and resources around this alternative career pathway. During the event participants were introduced to a new NCASE apprenticeship development guide, heard examples of state and local examples of apprenticeship initiatives, and discussed apprenticeship strategies across the childcare continuum.
