This planning tool from STEM Next was created to help OST programs that provide STEM programming to engage with families to support youth learning and success through collaborative culture and practices. The tool is organized by a new framework for family engagement in STEM known as CARE: Connect, Act, Reflect, and Empower. The tool was created through a review of the literature and input from an advisory council as well as state afterschool networks and providers. It can also be used by schools. This resource supports equity.
On September 21, 2023, the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment hosted the webinar, “Back to School—and Afterschool—Refresh: Updated Resources for System- and Program-Level Staff” to re-introduce the NCASE Resource Library, along with NCASE developed and recently updated toolkits. The National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment emphasizes that OST programs provide measurable benefits to youth and families, demonstrably improving academic and developmental outcomes along with other results such as positive youth-adult relationships and social-emotional learning. The Out-of-School Time Social-Emotional Learning and Mental Health Toolkit (Toolkit) was developed to support OST/school-age child care system leaders, technical assistance associates, and program providers.

The National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE) has developed a number of resources focused on addressing equity in Out-of-School Time. This publication is part of a series compiling NCASE resources on a particular theme for the benefit of state, territory, and Tribal Lead Agencies and their designated networks. The goal is to promote professional development and capacity building. In addition to links to relevant resources, it includes questions to support reflection and the development of action plans.
As parents and caregivers support their children in their growth and development, they have many opportunities for talking about and modeling kindness and inclusion. This tip sheet, Equity in Action: Tips for Parents and Caregivers, encourages parents and caregivers to reflect on the things they already do with their children to help them learn and practice equity. Building on these ideas, this resource suggests additional activities that families can make part of their routines to build a strong sense of social justice as children grow up and form their own identity.
NCASE has also developed a tip sheet for providers, Equity in Action: Tips for School-Age Child Care Providers, designed to build their capacity to support equity and inclusion in their work with children, families, and staff.
This practice brief explores some of the current mental health needs of school-age children, their families, and the OST workforce. In addition, this brief discusses the social and emotional constructs that promote resilience, as well as examples of mental health supports that states and local jurisdictions can consider for collaborative implementation.
Given evidence of trauma due to recent global and national issues, communities must consider all outlets and resources possible to address the needs of children and families. Out-of-school time (OST) programs foster socialization, relationships, and adaptive functioning. These programs are uniquely positioned to support and promote children’s healthy development, inclusive of mental health needs instigated by trauma. Children are not the only recipients; parents and the OST workforce can benefit from mental health supports provided directly or indirectly in these environments.
On June 3, 2020 the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE) hosted the webinar, "Navigating the Transition to Kindergarten and School-Age Care." NCASE was joined by colleagues from the National Center on Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning (NCECDTL) and the National Center on Parent, Family and Community Engagement (NCPFCE).
Participants were introduced to a new NCASE research brief, which provides systems and program level strategies for supporting transitions. They also explored information and resources from NCECDTL and NCPFCE to support successful transitions to kindergarten. They learned about and shared practices and resources to support the kindergarten and OST program transition process.
This toolkit provides parents and other caregivers ways to support their children’s learning outside of the classroom. It was updated March 13, 2020. It offers a range of different types of free online resources that can help children continue to build critical literacy skills at home or in group care, especially while schools are closed. Targeted ages vary by resource. Resources address science, math, and music literacy as well as reading and writing literacy. This resource supports the COVID-19 response.
The transition to kindergarten is a bit event in the life of a child - and for the child's parents and caregivers as well. The tipsheet from the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE) is designed to support parents an caregivers in thinking ahead about transition planning for their soon-to-be kindergartner. A range of tips on what to consider before, during, and beyond kindergarten can guide families with children who will need before and/or afterschool care. Finding a program that parents/caregivers and their children are comfortable with can help make the transition to kindergarten successful.
This issue brief identifies high impact strategies for actively co-creating opportunities for family engagement to support learning across the age continuum, both in school and during out-of-school time. The five building blocks include: (1) increasing attendance, (2) sharing data, (3) strengthening academic and social development, (4) improving digital media habits and fluency, and (5) maintaining strong relationships with families during key transitions. This brief includes information about after school and summer opportunities.
