This webinar by the Grantmakers for Education OST Impact group shares how funders, adults, and peers in OST spaces can provide support to LGBTQ+ youth, especially in the current context of attacks on LGBTQ+ identities. Panelists from the Trevor Project, Horizons Foundation, and an LGBTQ+ organization in Florida shared data on mental health concerns and suggestions for ways to create safe spaces in OST programs. A robust list of resources are also included. This resource supports equity.
This Better Kid Care module about supporting LGBTQ youth in out-of-school-time programs is designed to prepare staff to provide a supportive and inclusive environment. It includes videos of researchers, counselors, staff, parents, and youth who share their ideas and experiences. It also includes a number of helpful handouts, suggestions for wording about policies, and activity ideas. This resource supports equity.
This brief summarizes findings from a study about equity in out-of-school-time programs run by school districts. It explores: (1) what equity looks like in OST programs provided by equity-minded districts; (2) what challenges districts face integrating their equity goals and efforts into their OST programs; (3) what actions districts can take to meet these challenges; and (4) what further research is needed to better inform policy and practice. This journal article in Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences examines the role of afterschool and recommends that programs focus on relationships, developing youth interest, identity and social capital. Given the pressure from government and funders to focus on academics, this is an equity issue because research shows that wealthier youth are more likely to be offered enrichment experiences to develop interests and identify, but low-income and youth of color are more likely to have OST as extended forms of child care or schooling. This resource supports equity.
This paper is designed to raise understanding and awareness of LGBTQ+ challenges, the current anti-LGBTQ climate, and ways that after school leaders can address these issues and support LGBTQ+ youth. Given that 2022 data found that only 37% of LGBTQ+ youth identified home as an affirming space and only 55% felt school was an affirming place, it is essential that OST programs access these resources prepare their staff to provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment. Temescal Associates sponsored this webinar to explore the concerns being raised about youth mental health following their return to school and afterschool after the COVID shutdown. It features Dr. Gil Noam from Partnerships in Education and Resiliency (PEAR) and a panel with Eric Gurna, consultant and former President of LA's Best, and Diane Carrillo from ARC-Experience. With surveys indicating that 30 percent of youth need intervention, and the shortage of mental health clinicians, the panel explores the role out-of-school can play in supporting youth mental health through trauma-informed practice and in providing routine and structure, physical outlets, positive behavior management, and helping youth learn self-management through activities like yoga and mindfulness. This issue brief from the Government Alliance on Race and Equity focuses on unifying strategies and structures that facilitate a deep, widespread, and sustained commitment to racial equity across the whole of government. It outlines four basic strategies and each one includes actions that specific agencies can take: (1) Use an inside/outside strategy by building partnerships between government and the communities experiencing systemic racism; (2) Build capacity for lasting organizational change by providing training from experts and build Racial Equity Core Teams; (3) Build networked structures across the whole of federal government for long-term change through a centralized office and lifting up high-achieving agency practices; and (4) Prepare for and learn from internal and external backlash. This series of four reports on LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) students of color by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) examines the experiences of Black, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latinx, and Native and Indigenous LGBTQ youth. Each report includes information on the experiences of LGBTQ students of color in middle and high school, examining indicators of negative school climate as well as supports and resources.
