On June 3, 2020 the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE) hosted the webinar, "Navigating the Transition to Kindergarten and School-Age Care." NCASE was joined by colleagues from the National Center on Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning (NCECDTL) and the National Center on Parent, Family and Community Engagement (NCPFCE).
This toolkit includes resources for training on trauma-informed social-emotional learning in the classroom. There is a PowerPoint slide deck, a workshop facilitator guide, and a supplemental handout. It includes information on ACES and trauma, systemic adversity and historical trauma, concrete and evidence-based strategies on trauma-informed strategies, and educator self-care.
During this webinar, authors from the book, Changemakers! Practitioners Advance Access and Equity in Out-of-School Time, share how they have adapted their practices to continue to support youth, families, and staff during the pandemic.
The transition to kindergarten is an important milestone in a young child’s life. While this transition is often accompanied by much excitement and anticipation, it can also bring uncertainty and anxiety as children face changes on multiple levels.
This issue brief explores youth engagement in out-of-school time through a review of studies on out-of-school time attendance and participation by middle and high school students. It identifies promising practices for cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional engagement that are essential for achieving positive outcomes. It includes program-level examples from four states.
This review of existing research on literacy programs for out-of-school time (OST) was conducted as part of an initiative for Philadelphia. It includes evidence on literacy outcomes, staffing, and training needs for tutoring programs, after school and summer programs, and online literacy programs.
With an emphasis on equity and inclusion, this white paper outlines promising practices for engaging families in STEM as a means of increasing youth participation and retention in STEM pathways. Parents play a critical role in engaging youth in STEM activities and careers, especially for girls, youth of color, low-income youth, and youth with disabilities.
This issue brief identifies high impact strategies for actively co-creating opportunities for family engagement to support learning across the age continuum, both in school and during out-of-school time.
This toolkit summarizes best practice tools and strategies for fostering family engagement in Out-of-School Time (OST) programs. Developed by BOSTnet years ago based on a four-year initiative aimed at improving youth outcomes through family involvement, this classic tool is still relevant today.
